The book includes two stories by Heinrich Heine, “The Rabbi of Bacherach” and “Shylock,” as well as the poem “Hebrew Melodies.” This beautiful edition is illustrated with the lithographs of Max Liebermann, one of of the most prominent turn-of-the-century European painters.
Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was a German poet journalist, essayist, and literary critic.
Max Liebermann (1847-1935) was one of the most prominent European artists of his time. He designed this cycle of drawings for the 1923 bibliophile edition of The Rabbi of Bacherach. It is considered an outstanding example of book illustration.
Elizabeth Petuchowski is the co-author of Ministers of Compassion During the Nazi Period: Gertrud Luckner and Raoul Wallenberg.
