This book examines archaeological research about African peoples who were brought to the Caribbean, as well as their descendants in the twentieth century. These contributions cover a wide geographic sample of regions and range from Caribbean studies to individual investigations on 12 different islands of the English, Dutch, Spanish, and French territories.
A broad spectrum of themes reveals the character of the African experience in the Caribbean from an archaeological perspective, with topics on lifeways, landscapes, settlement patterns, housing, technological developments, health, burial practices, economics, trade, and cultural continuities. The illustrations include photographs of sites and artifacts, as well as precise drawings of many archaeological features noted at these sites in all parts of the Caribbean.
